This year marks 28 years since the Spring/Summer 1998 ready-to-wear collections from Chanel and Prada hit the runway. Yet, so many of these pieces remain as classic and modern for 2026 as they were then and likely still be in 2054.
In 1998, Miuccia Prada’s collection reflected much of what her design philosophy remains today: functionality, modern elegance, and an unconventional blend of fashion and art. All of this was evident throughout the Spring/Summer 1998 lineup, looks that felt functional for the everyday woman, defined by a muted or neutral color palette, and effortless silhouettes designed to be lived in.
Much like Prada’s SS98 showing, Karl Lagerfeld’s collection for Chanel featured a similar palette of beige, white, and black. While grounded in minimalism, it also had tailored tweed pieces in subtle blues and reds, all with Chanel’s signature extravagance and detailed sophistication. Spring/Summer 1998 also marked 60 years of Chanel, making it a monumental moment for the house. For this collection, Lagerfeld played with iconic Chanel house codes, incorporating sheer fabrics, sequin embellishments, and his own contemporary, edgy perspective.
